What Are CNC Machining Parts?

CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining is a subtractive manufacturing process in which preprogrammed computer software dictates the movement of factory tools and machinery. Unlike additive manufacturing (3D printing) or forming (stamping), CNC machining starts with a solid block (blank) of material and removes layers to achieve a precise final geometry.

CNC machining parts are characterized by:

High precision: Tolerances as tight as ±0.005mm (±0.0002″) are achievable.

Complex geometries: 3D contours, undercuts, threads, and pockets are routine.

Material versatility: Metals, plastics, composites, and even ceramics can be machined.

Repeatability: Once programmed, the same part can be produced thousands of times with identical results.

At Flow Wing Metal, we combine multiaxis CNC technology, skilled programming, and rigorous quality control to deliver machined components for aerospace, medical, automotive, energy, and general industrial applications.

CNC Machining Parts of Methods:

Different CNC machining methods remove material in distinct ways. Choosing the correct CNC machining process directly impacts cost, lead time, surface finish, and the achievable geometry of CNC machining parts.

1. CNC Milling:

In CNC machining, rotating cutting tools such as end mills, face mills, and drills remove material from a stationary workpiece. This method is commonly used to produce complex features in CNC machining parts, including slots, pockets, and contours.

Typical CNC milling operations:

  • Face milling for flat surfaces
  • Peripheral milling for contours
  • Slotting for grooves
  • Contouring for 2D/3D profiles
  • Pocketing for recessed areas
  • Thread milling for internal or external threads

2. CNC Turning:

CNC turning removes material from a rotating workpiece using cutting tools, making it ideal for cylindrical CNC machining parts such as shafts, pins, or threaded components.

Key turning operations:

  • Facing and contouring
  • Threading and grooving
  • Taper turning
  • Drilling and boring

3. CNC MillTurning (MultiTasking):

A single machine combines turning and milling capabilities, allowing a CNC machining part to be fully completed in one setup.

Advantage: Eliminates multiple setups; improves accuracy (no rechucking errors); reduces lead time.
Best for: Complex rotationally symmetric CNC machining parts with off-axis holes, flats, or slots.

4. CNC Drilling & Tapping:

Dedicated or interpolated processes for creating holes and internal threads in CNC machining parts.

Techniques: Peck drilling (deep holes), through-hole, blind hole, counterboring, countersinking, reaming, rigid tapping, thread milling.corners or intricate cavities

5. CNC EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining):

Material is removed by controlled electrical sparks (thermal erosion) rather than mechanical cutting, making it ideal for producing precise CNC machining parts.

Wire EDM: Uses a thin brass or coated wire to cut through conductive materials; ideal for punches, dies, extrusion profiles in CNC machining parts.
Sinker EDM: A shaped electrode is plunged into the workpiece to create cavities, sharp internal corners, or complex 3D features in CNC machining parts.

Best for: Hardened tool steels, carbide, titanium; CNC machining parts requiring burr-free edges or features impossible with conventional cutters.

Materials for CNC Machining:

Flow Wing Metal machines a broad range of metals, alloys, and technical plastics. Material selection affects machinability, tool life, cost, and final part performance.

Material CategoryCommon GradesMachinability Notes
Rostfreier Stahl303, 304/304L, 316/316L, 410, 420, 440C, 17-4 PHWork hardens rapidly. Requires sharp tools, rigid setups, and generous coolant. 303 is ”free-machining” (added sulfur). 316 is tougher but offers superior corrosion resistance.
Carbon SteelA36, 1018, 1045, 1144, 1215 (free-machining), 4140, 4340Generally good to excellent machinability. Low-carbon steels (1018) can be gummy. Heat-treated alloys (4140 pre-hard) require carbide tooling.
Alloy & Tool SteelA2, D2, O1, S7, H13, P20Hard and abrasive. Requires slow speeds, rigid setups, and often grinding/EDM for finishing. Excellent wear resistance.
Aluminium6061-T6, 6063, 5052, 7075-T6, 2024Excellent machinability (can be ”gummy” with dull tools). High speeds/feeds possible. 6061 is the most common. 7075 is aerospace-grade (stronger, harder).
Copper & BrassC110 (Electrolytic), C360 (Free-Cutting Brass), C260, C17200 (Beryllium Copper)Brass (C360) machines beautifully. Pure copper is gummy; requires sharp, polished tools. Beryllium copper requires dust control (toxic).
TitanGrade 2 (Commercially Pure), Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V)Difficult to machine (poor thermal conductivity). Requires low speeds, high feed rates, rigid setups, and flood coolant. Prone to work hardening.
Nickel AlloysInconel 625/718, Monel 400/K500, Hastelloy C276Very difficult (high work hardening, abrasive). Requires negative rake tools, slow speeds, heavy feeds, and rigid machines. Premium tooling grades only.
KunststoffeAcetal (Delrin), Nylon 6/6, PEEK, PTFE (Teflon), Polycarbonate, ABSCut easily but require sharp tools to avoid melting. PEEK is medical-grade and biocompatible. PTFE is soft and tends to ”smear.”
