Professional aluminum weld on hinge for gates, hatches, and industrial doors. Marine grade. Weld directly to aluminum frames. Stock and custom sizes.

Why Choose a Weld On Design?

Many fabricators default to bolt-on hinges because they are easy to source. However, bolted hinges introduce stress concentration at the fastener holes. Over time, especially in high-vibration environments like boat hatches or truck compartments, those holes can elongate. The result is a sagging door that no longer seals.

A properly installed aluminum weld on hinge distributes load across the entire base plate. There are no holes to strip or wallow out. The joint becomes monolithic with the frame. For security applications, a welded hinge cannot be unbolted from the outside. For marine use, there are no exposed fasteners to trap salt and moisture.

Welding also allows you to position the hinge exactly where you need it. Drill templates for bolt-on hinges force you into fixed hole patterns. With our aluminum weld on hinge, you tack it in place, check operation, and then complete the welds. This flexibility is invaluable when working with fabricated frames that are not perfectly square.

Material and Finish Specifications:

Our standard aluminum weld on hinge is manufactured from 6061-T6 aluminum. This alloy offers excellent weldability without post-weld heat treatment for most applications. The pin is made from 6061 as well, creating a compatible pair that moves freely without galling.

For high-wear or saltwater environments, we offer a version with a stainless steel pin. The aluminum leaves remain weldable while the pin provides extra corrosion resistance. We can also apply a hard anodized finish to the hinge body. This increases surface hardness to 50 Rockwell C or more, reducing wear from repeated cycling.

If you require a specific alloy for your aluminum weld on hinge, such as 5083 for marine structural use or 7075 for extreme strength, we can produce custom orders. Minimum quantity for custom alloy hinges is 50 pieces.

Surface finish on stock units is mill finish. You can weld first and then powder coat the entire assembly. Alternatively, we can provide pre-anodized hinges. Note that anodizing must be removed from the weld areas before installation, which adds a preparation step.

Standard Sizes and Load Ratings:

We stock four sizes of aluminum weld on hinge. Each size is rated for a specific door weight based on two hinges per door leaf.

Size A – Light Duty:

Base plate 2 x 2 inches | Pin diameter 3/8 inch | Leaf thickness 3/16 inch
Rated for doors up to 100 lbs. Suitable for small cabinet doors, electrical enclosures, and access panels.

Size B – Medium Duty:

Base plate 3 x 3 inches | Pin diameter 1/2 inch | Leaf thickness 1/4 inch
Rated for doors up to 250 lbs. Common on equipment guards, trailer toolboxes, and residential gates.

Size C – Heavy Duty:

Base plate 4 x 4 inches | Pin diameter 5/8 inch | Leaf thickness 5/16 inch
Rated for doors up to 500 lbs. Used on commercial security gates, truck ramps, and marine hatches.

Size D – Extra Heavy Duty:

Base plate 5 x 5 inches | Pin diameter 3/4 inch | Leaf thickness 3/8 inch
Rated for doors up to 800 lbs. For industrial blast doors, hangar access, and bridge lift sections.

For all sizes, the pin is retained by a 1/4-20 stainless steel set screw. Maximum operating angle is 180 degrees. Each aluminum weld on hinge is shipped with the pin lubricated with aluminum-compatible grease.

How to Weld Our Hinge Correctly:

Because you are visiting a welding shop website, we assume you have welding equipment. However, aluminum hinge welding has specific requirements. Follow these steps for best results.

Step 1 – Fit-up

Position both leaves of the aluminum weld on hinge on your frame and door. Use clamps or magnets to hold them temporarily. The gap between the two leaves should be 1/16 to 1/8 inch to allow free pin rotation after welding.

Step 2 – Tack welding

Apply four small tack welts per leaf at the corners of the base plate. Use 3/32 inch 4043 filler rod with AC TIG at 120 to 140 amps. Allow the hinge to cool between tacks.

Step 3 – Check alignment

Open and close the door after tacking. If binding occurs, you can break the tacks and reposition the aluminum weld on hinge. This is the advantage of welding over bolting.

Step 4 – Final welding

Weld continuous beads along the two long edges of each base plate. Do not weld the short ends. Keep your interpass temperature below 250°F to avoid softening the hinge. A wet rag used carefully on the hinge body can help extract heat.

Step 5 – Post-weld

Allow the assembly to cool naturally. Re-lubricate the pin through the grease hole if present. Remove any spatter with a stainless brush.

If you cannot weld yourself, we offer a service where we weld our own aluminum weld on hinge to your supplied frame. You ship us the frame sections, and we return a complete welded assembly.

Common Applications:

The aluminum weld on hinge is versatile across many industries.

Gates – Driveway gates, pool enclosures, farm pens. The weld-on design prevents the hinge from being unbolted by intruders.

Boat Hatches – Engine access hatches, livewell lids, deck plates. No dissimilar metal corrosion with aluminum hulls.

Industrial Machinery – Guard doors, electrical cabinet doors, cleanout ports. Welded hinges stay tight under vibration.

Trailers – Ramp hinges, storage box lids, tailgate hinges. Lightweight and rustproof.

HVAC Access – Rooftop unit panels, duct access doors, filter compartments. Easy to weld onto thin sheet metal frames.

For each application, the aluminum weld on hinge provides a permanent pivot point that will not loosen over decades of service.

Custom Hinge Options:

Stock sizes cover most needs, but some projects require modifications. We offer the following custom options for the aluminum weld on hinge.

– Longer leaves for extra weld area
– Thicker base plates for high load cycles
– Offset leaves for inset doors or flush applications
– Special pin materials including titanium or Inconel
– Non-standard pin diameters
– Laser engraved part numbers or logos

Minimum order for custom aluminum weld on hinge is 25 pieces per unique design. Lead time is 3 to 4 weeks for custom tooling and machining.
